In recent years the number of large scale surfboard factories producing ‘off the rack’ surfboards has gone through the roof. This means that the choice of surfboard shapes is better than ever but it also means that the consumer has no idea what they’re spending their money on! Where were the surfboards made, who made them, what materials were used, what was the quality control like in the factory that produced them? These should be important questions when considering a new board as they’ll make a big difference to how well the board will work and how long it will last.
The huge choice can also be daunting as a lot of surfboard manufacturers will give very similar information about the performance of each board. There’s also the different marketing jargon that surf brands use to sell you boards - ‘Helium’, ‘FST’, ‘LFT’, ‘Carbon Flex’, they sound good but do they actually do anything?
The benefits of getting a custom board from a local shaper are huge:
· The shaper should be able to talk you through all the different elements of a surfboard and how they affect it's performance
· You can talk through exactly what you’re looking to get out of the surfboard, your skill level, where you surf and get a custom surfboard that’s right for you without having to sift through all of the marketing jargon
· You know who’s made the board for you and that they’re going to take care in each step of the construction process, you can even call in to check on the progress
· You know what materials from blank to fibreglass have been used and how well they’re suited to the board you want
At Visionary Surfboards we take pride in our work and do our best to ensure that the board you get is one that will suit your needs, look good and give you many happy years of surfing.
